Humble approves educational partnership with Harris-Galveston Subsidence District

Humble City Council members approved an agreement with the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District aimed at boosting water conservation goals through educational sponsorship programs.

Council members approved the agreement during the June 12 council meeting.

Humble City Manager Jason Stuebe said the agreement aims to increase water conservation awareness and activities through the education of elementary and intermediate students.

“We do this on an annual basis,” Stuebe said. “We provide funding and educational materials to go out to local schools to educate them on water conservation, and in return we get credits for water.”

A closer look

Officials noted the subsidence district will coordinate the program with area schools and provide:

• School curriculum and home plumbing retrofit kits
• Training for teachers and support documents, such as presentations and program outlines
• An evaluation of the program to the city of Humble
• Information related to other water conservation program objectives and initiatives

According to the agreement, the city of Humble will receive a water conservation credit equal to 84,000 gallons of groundwater for each program sponsorship.

The program can include up to 450 sponsorships, with the city of Humble paying the subsidence district $40 per sponsorship, according to the agreement.

What’s next

The partnership will be effective through the end of the 2026-27 school year, per the agreement.
