Democrat incumbent John Whitmire is projected to win the race for Texas Senate District 15 over Republican challenger George Brian Vachris.

With 774 of 782 precincts reporting in Harris County, Whitmire has received 156,593 votes, or 65.21% of all votes, while Vachris received 83,530 votes, or 34.79% of the total.

Texas Senate District 15 is located entirely within Harris County. Cities within the district include Houston, Humble, Atascocita, Barrett, Baytown, Channelview, Cloverleaf, Highlands, Jacinto City, Sheldon and Spring Valley Village.

Democrat incumbent John Whitmire has maintained his lead over Republican challenger George Brian Vachris in the race for Texas Senate District 15.

With 11 of 782 precincts reporting in Harris County, Whitmire has received 108,080 votes, or 66.88% of all votes, while Vachris received 53,528 votes, or 33.12% of the total.

Texas Senate District 15 is located entirely within Harris County. Cities within the district include Houston, Humble, Atascocita, Barrett, Baytown, Channelview, Cloverleaf, Highlands, Jacinto City, Sheldon and Spring Valley Village.

Early voting results show Democrat incumbent John Whitmire leading Republican challenger George Brian Vachris in the race for Texas Senate District 15.

According to early voting results, Whitmire received 107,930 early and absentee votes, or 66.87% of all votes, while Vachris received 53,474 votes, or 33.13% of the total.


Texas Senate District 15 is located entirely within Harris County. Cities within the district include Houston, Humble, Atascocita, Barrett, Baytown, Channelview, Cloverleaf, Highlands, Jacinto City, Sheldon and Spring Valley Village.

Whitmire, currently the state’s longest-serving state senator, was first elected to theTexas Senate in 1983 after having served 10 years in the Texas House of Representatives.

As previously reported by Community Impact, Whitmire has focused his campaign around increasing public safety funding, criminal justice reform, Medicaid expansion, increasing public education funding and flood mitigation.

Vachris, an engineer and public school math teacher, has campaigned to improve Texas infrastructure, with a particular focus on the state’s electric grid in the wake of Winter Storm Uri in 2021, according to his campaign website. Additionally, Vachris has campaigned to reduce school property taxes by finding alternative sources of revenue, increase law enforcement presence in communities, stop the outsourcing of Texas jobs and give parents more freedom when choosing education options for their children.


In November 2021, Whitmire announced his intention to run for mayor in the city of Houston’s November 2023 election.
