Why are you running to represent Texas Senate District 15?

I am running to continue to be the voice for Senate District 15 constituents and all Texans. Public service is a calling, and it has been my calling for decades. I would like to continue to use my seniority, experience and knowledge to advocate for good policies that will make our lives better.

What are the biggest challenges facing District 15, and how would address them if elected?

Public safety: we have seen a spike in crime throughout Houston in the last two years, and Senate District 15 is not exempt to it. I am and will continue to work with law enforcement and the community on finding solutions and funding for crime prevention. Health care: Texas continues to lead the way on uninsured residents. Medicaid expansion will alleviate our residents. Flooding: many Senate District 15 homes were victims of [Hurricane] Harvey. We must put more resources in drainage maintenance and build another reservoir.

How will you work to build productive relationships across district and party lines?

I have built strong relationships for the past 48 years in the Legislature, and I will continue to foster these relationships that have allowed me to work across the aisle. I am the only Democratic committee chair in the Senate and one of only three Democratic senators on finance. I have established relationships with legislative and agency leadership to get things accomplished throughout the years.

What changes would you like to see made to the state's school finance system, if any?

The state should make public education their top priority and fund schools adequately and equitably with state funds. Teachers should be paid more and guaranteed quality health insurance and retirement benefits.

How would you ensure your constituents have access to the health care services they need?

First, I will continue advocating and fighting for expanding Medicaid. Millions of Texans would be benefited from us accepting federal assistance with the expansion of Medicaid. The pandemic brought financial difficulties as well as health care challenges to many residents. I will continue to advocate for COVID[-19] tests, vaccines and any financial help we can get.
