The city of Katy announced March 12 the cancellation or postponement of several community events through the end of April in response to coronavirus, according to a press release.

As of March 12, there are zero positive cases in Katy, per the release.

Cancellations and postponements include Spring Community Campout on March 20, Keep Katy Beautiful's Spring Garage Sale on March 28, Basket's & Bunnies on April 4, KKB's Trash-Off on April 4, KKB's Earth Day speaker series and the Katy Police Association's Annual Fish Fry on April 14, according to the press release. No details were provided about when the events will be rescheduled.

The city's actions come after city of Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner signed a local state of disaster due to a public health emergency, per the release.

Officials from Harris and Fort Bend counties officials announced recommendations to minimize the risk of spreading coronavirus and have both released emergency disaster declarations, per the release.

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo strongly urged the community to limit large gatherings at a March 12 press conference.

"We are asking that the community think very hard about any gathering of people," Hidalgo said. "We encourage gatherings to the extent that they can be, to be postponed or be done online. We are strongly urging that organizers of gatherings over 250 people cancel those gatherings. This is something that we need the community's help with."

The city of Katy will continue to provide updates as more information surfaces.

The city of Fulshear, meanwhile, posted on its website that it is closely monitoring Fort Bend County Health and Human Services and meeting daily, but provided no other updates.
