Flood waters are receding around Katy but motorists are still asked to avoid certain local roadways:

  • Hwy. 90 between Cardiff Road and FM 2855 — Water is still on the roadway and debris has also been reported on the street.

The city of Katy and is asking Katy area residents to avoid certain roadways due to closures or high water.

The city asks that residents continue to avoid Avenue D at First Street, the access road intersection of I-10 and FM 1463, Clay Road between Katy Hockley Road and Katy Hockley Cut-Off Road, and bridges and streets over or near the bayou.

Lieutenant Simon VanDyk, ESD 48's public information officer, said by phone Tuesday that the area around Barker Reservoir is a problem area and that residents should avoid driving in the area, but that overall conditions are improving and all major roadways through the area are usable.

"There's no real issue of people trying to leave the Katy area due to flooding, provided their neighborhood isn't flooded itself," VanDyk said.

About 30 to 50 civilian volunteers with private boats have been assisting ESD 48 staff with water rescues but about a dozen of those boats are now staged in a holding pattern until needed, VanDyk said.

The city indicated that other roads may be inaccessible that city government is not aware of and that drivers should avoid driving into high water. Residents should drive slowly through neighborhoods to avoid pushing wakes of water into homes, which may cause damage.

The city of Katy also posted an announcement to its website for residents who were forced to abandon their vehicles on roadways because the vehicles were stalled or flooded. The Katy Police Department coordinated removal of the vehicles with towing companies to ensure that the roadways were clear. The city is advising owners of removed vehicles to contact the towing companies listed below for assistance in locating their vehicles:

Please note that these companies can only assist those whose vehicles were found abandoned within the city of Katy.
