Momentum Katy, a 36,000-square-foot indoor rock-climbing gym located at 25410 Katy Mills Parkway, Katy, will hold a soft opening July 24 from noon-8 p.m. and hold its grand opening July 29, according to General Manager Rees Williams.
The Katy gym is the first Texas location for Utah-based Momentum, and another gym is under construction in Houston. These will also be the first locations for REI's Co-Op Climb concept, according to an announcement from REI and Williams.

"The concept is basically new for both companies," Williams said. "We’re doing a climbing-specific pro shop in our space. Our customers will get the high-end retail that REI provides."
The gym will have about 20 staffers, all of whom are climbing instructors with varying levels of expertise. Williams said REI and Momentum will offer their own classes, but as part of the co-op, REI will organize rock climbing trips to the Austin area.
"We get to leverage their market,” he said. "REI has a very strong customer base."
Momentum Katy can host up to 300 climbers at a time and offers bouldering, moderate climbing, more advanced lead climbing and an auto-belay climbing section. Belay climbing does not require a partner on the ground level to counterweight a climber via rope and is ideal for parties or customers who wish to forego basic training first, Williams said.
Momentum Katy will also have a 15-meter Olympic-regulation climbing wall. A type of rock climbing known as sport climbing will be part of the 2020 Summer Games.
Day passes are $20 for age 12 and older and $14 for children age 11 and younger. Punch cards for 10 visits are $185. Belay devices, harnesses, shoes and chalk bag rentals are also available.
Momentum Katy also offers individual and group memberships. Children's activities are available, and Williams said the gym plans to offer summer camps in 2018.
