The background

After the October passage of Senate Bill 2, counties with populations over 75,000 will elect three new board of director at-large positions for their respective appraisal districts, creating a board of nine members. The new board members will assume a nonpaid, elected position, according to the FBCAD website.

The first elected board of directors members will serve two-year terms beginning July 1 and ending Dec. 31, 2026. Future elected board members will serve four-year terms, according to the FBCAD website.

The board of directors was previously composed of five members appointed by the district taxing units with the county tax assessor-collector serving as an additional board member, according to an election advisory by the Texas Secretary of State.

According to the FBCAD website, the board is responsible for:
  • Establishing the appraisal district office
  • Hiring/firing of a chief appraiser
  • Holding a board meeting at least once each quarter
  • Adopting the district’s annual operating budget
