BunSlut, a Houston-based smashburger concept, opened in the new Katy Food Hall.

On the menu

The late-night eatery—open until 4 a.m. at most locations—is known for its burgers made with halal beef, said Brandon Gawthorp, the brand's new co-owner.

Burgers are prepared with cheese, grilled onions, pickles and the concept’s signature sauce, according to the website. Other menu items include:
  • Loaded fries
  • Patty melt sandwich
  • Various flavors of milkshakes, including Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Fruity Pebbles

Digging deeper

Gawthorp, founder of Katy-based chain Urban Bird Hot Chicken, acquired the BunSlut brand in December from founders Ali Nasser and Mohammad Jamshad.

Nasser is also the co-founder of Houston-based concepts Dripped Birria Tacos and Main Bird Hot Chicken—the two other eateries in the new Katy Food Hall, a food court, Gawthorp said. Nasser also allegedly sold Main Bird Hot Chicken, he said.

Since the acquisition, Gawthrop has made some changes at BunSlut that he said improved the quality of menu items, including using potato buns from a local bakery and changing the fry seasoning. The menu also features new slider combos presented on bright red buns.

“It's a stand out; it's just different,” he said.

Zooming out

Founded in 2021 as a food truck, BunSlut now has five brick-and-mortar locations across the Houston area, plus a food truck in Cypress, Gawthorp said. Next, he plans to open a sixth brick-and-mortar restaurant in Missouri City this summer.

“Right now we're looking for some more locations [in the Houston area]," he said. "Kind of like Urban Bird, we like to go into second-generation-type locations so we can open quicker.”
