Iconic Cantonese restaurant Hong Kong Food Street, formerly located in Houston's Asiatown neighborhood, has secured a new space in Katy at or near Katy Asian Town, according to project details from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

What we know

Owner Johnny Cheung confirmed the restaurant's pending return and said he is waiting to break ground on the new location in Katy via Facebook. Until then, details on the opening timeline remain unclear, he said.

The background

Hong Kong Food Street, which closed indefinitely in December 2020, was known for its roasted meats, including roast duck, pork belly and pork cracklings. Other prominent menu items included noodles and seafood.

In a Feb. 5 Facebook post, Cheung reflected on Hong Kong Food Street's success with images of newspaper clippings he said his mother saved from 2003.

In the caption, Cheung wrote, "Mama didn't raise no quitter. I'll see y'all soon."
