Just as schools and students are getting ready for the academic year to end, Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones’ Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 public safety initiative is preparing for its summer break phase.
Established in 2024, Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 aims to improve the county’s walkability as well as the overall safety for its residents by constructing 75 miles of sidewalks in multiple phases throughout unincorporated Harris County, according to its website.
On the horizon
The project’s $16 million second phase began in 2025 and is expected to be completed by fall 2026, Briones said.

Completed projects or ready for final inspection:
- Fry Road from FM 529 to Jazzy Cove
- West Little York from Westgreen Boulevard to Hemmenway Elementary
- Greenhouse Road from Morton Road to Kieth Harrow Boulevard
- Eldridge Parkway from Oak Bend Forest Drive to Rosewood Street
- Greenhouse Road from Plantation Cove Lane to Rebel Yell Drive
- Westpark Drive from Westheimer Place Drive to Forest Park Drive
- Mason Road from I-10 Frontage Road to Mason Creek
Under construction with completion expected by July:
- Eldridge Parkway South from Harris County Flood Control District Project D122-00-00 to Carruth Lane
- West Little York from Barker Cypress Road to Queenston Boulevard
- Westgreen Boulevard from Kingsland Boulevard to I-10 Frontage Road
Projects in permitting with construction start expected in mid-May and completion in mid-July:
- Saums Road from Westgreen Boulevard to Old Fry Road
- Barker Cypress Road from Groschke Road to The Goddard School of Houston
In 2025, Community Impact reported that Harris County completed the first phase, which consisted of 50 miles of sidewalks at a cost of $20 million.
Also of note
Briones also held a May 5 news conference to announce the start of construction of 4.25 miles of sidewalk along South Mason Road.
The $2.54 million project will be primarily funded by Precinct 4 with contributions from Cornerstones Municipal Utility District and Memorial Municipal Utility District.
“We are coming together to get it done," Briones said. "We heard you at the numerous town halls that we have held. We saw that this was a common theme in the feedback from the community, and as government public servants, we’re here to listen and that we’re here to deliver, and that’s exactly what we’re doing."
Construction for the South Mason Road sidewalk will commence in June and is expected to last one month, Briones said.
