Reconstruction work on Montrose Boulevard is set to start March 31.

What you need to know

According to a March 24 update from the Montrose TIRZ, the project will affect one lane in each direction between Allen Parkway and West Dallas initially, then continue to West Clay Street.

The project includes fully reconstructing Montrose Boulevard from Allen Parkway to West Clay Street into a four-lane concrete roadway with a median, sidewalks, trees, signals and a pedestrian bridge.

The two-phase process begins with reconstructing the boulevard from Allen Parkway to West Dallas Street, and Phase 2 from West Dallas Street to West Clay Street.

According to the TIRZ website, here is what residents can expect to experience during the construction phase:
  • Minimum one lane of traffic in each direction
  • Driveway access will be maintained at all times
  • Traffic delays
  • Uniformed police officers present as needed
Montrose TIRZ officials said the tax reinvestment zone is committed to minimizing disruptions and keeping the community informed through regular updates.

Construction is expected to take approximately one year and will be complete by the second quarter of 2026.

How we got here

The $17.9 million project has been in the works since 2022 with several design changes taking place over the last year or two. The improvement project was also disrupted in mid-2024 after Houston Mayor John Whitmire paused all transportation projects for review.

The pause resulted in the project needing more design changes, including scrapping a shared-use path to maintain vehicle lanes.
