Officials with the city of Houston reopened portions of Kipling, Hawthorne, Garrott and Emerson streets in Montrose in February as work continues on a $48.8 million water line project.

The backstory

The project, which kicked off in 2022, was initially slated for completion this summer and is slated for completion in October. Project officials provided updated timelines in February for when work is expected to take place on other Midtown-area streets that fall within the vicinity of the work, including Audubon Place as well as Holman, Fannin and Tuam streets.

The details

Underground and pavement work on Audubon is already completed, and the final landscaping and sod work is slated for completion in March, at which point the road will be fully reopened. Work on Holman, Fannin and Tuam streets will be carried out along the following timelines, according to officials with the Houston Public Works Department:
  • Holman from Bagby to Fannin streets: Work underneath the roadway is slated for completion in September, while paving and landscaping work will be done in October, including work on sidewalks and driveways.
  • Fannin from Holman to Tuam: Work underneath the roadway is slated for completion in September, while paving and landscaping work will be done in October.
  • Tuam from Main to Hamilton streets: Work underneath the roadway is slated for completion in August, while paving and landscaping work will be done in September.
The big picture

The project involves running a new 72-inch water line from Mount Vernon Street in Montrose to Crawford Street in Midtown. The line will carry drinking water from the city of Houston's southwest pump station. Work also includes improvements to sanitary sewer lines, storm systems and new concrete pavement for sidewalks.
