After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Houston will once again host the Shell Freedom Over Texas July 4 event in person.

During a May 31 press conference, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the return of the event. According to its website, Freedom Over Texas is a six-hour event featuring live entertainment, festivities and a firework show. The event takes place along Allen Parkway at Eleanor Tinsley and Sam Houston parks.

Turner said guests can expect different festivities from the sponsors of the event, such as a kids zone sponsored by Wal-Mart, a Dr. Pepper Cool Zone and a Budlight Seltzer Summer Sizzle area—a place for guests to sit back while enjoying a view of the main stage. Freedom Over Texas is also celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Johnson Space Center’s presence in Houston. The event will feature a Space City Experience, an area that will feature the history of NASA and its upcoming missions, Turner said.

According to James Cowan, Shell's head of legal and associate general counsel, the event will feature Clay Walker as its headliner and other performers, such as Step Rideau and the Zydeco Outlaws, Walker County, Sawyer Brown and Blanco Brown.

Tickets for Freedom Over Texas are on sale for $10. Children under age 5 can enter for free. Once inside the event’s grounds, activities will be free, and concessions will be available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased here.
