Members of Houston's arts community can receive financial assistance through a new $2 million aid program approved by City Council on Aug. 19.

Nonprofits can receive up to $15,000 in grant funding, and individual artists can receive up to $1,000. The grant program is open to a list of over 1,200 artists, creative businesses and nonprofits that have previously applied for grant funding from the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs. Eligible applicants on the list will be notified Aug. 24.

The program is part of series of relief efforts funded by Houston's $404 million allocation of federal Coronavirus Aid, Recovery and Economic Security Act funding. The Houston Arts Alliance will vet and rank applications and begin distributing funds in September.

"The arts and cultural sectors have been hit incredibly hard by the pandemic and we need everyone to keep fighting to survive and be part of the city's recovery," Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a new release.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, members of Houston's arts community have been finding creative ways to support each other despite facing months of canceled events and performances.
