The founder of Clothed by Faith in Katy never intended to form a nonprofit when she decided she wanted to help those in need.
Abi Morton only wanted to help people with a short-term clothing drive in July 2013.
“I just texted all my friends and said, ‘I want to buy clothing and give it all away,’” Morton said. “But I didn’t really know what I was doing.”
She used $1,500 her friends donated to her to buy clothes so she could give them to those in need, but her friends kept giving Morton more clothes.
“People would just turn up at the house bringing clothes,” she said.
Morton obtained a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status for the charity in February 2015 and said her Christian faith and life experiences are behind the organization.
Morton, who grew up in England, said her mother was a Hungarian refugee and her family struggled with poverty.
“I can relate to a lot of the people and the clients [who] we meet,” Morton said. “I have a huge amount of passion and compassion for them.”
As a child, Morton went to “jumble” sales, similar to a rummage sale, where secondhand clothing was sold.
“I did appreciate what I had, but I was bullied for what I wore,” Morton said. “It’s not vanity to want to wear nice things or to feel good about yourself.”
The charity provides gently used clothing and Morton said she is looking to move into a larger space than her location in the Mason Creek Business Park. The charity also has ministry resources and information for the recipients it helps.
In March, the organization will go mobile and distribute clothing with a truck and a box trailer.
“It’s just going to be called the ‘Clothed by Faith Roaming Closet,’” Morton said. “People can come on board, fill up their gift bag and take a week’s worth of clothing.”
Clothes are given for free in a gift bag. A request form can be filled out online to accommodate individual tastes.
“We don’t just want to give the individual clothes,” Morton said. “We want to know what their fashion is and their style.”
