As the aftermath of the major April 18 rainfall event continues to wreak havoc in the Cy-Fair area, officials with Cy-Fair ISD have announced all schools and facilities will be closed through Friday, April 22. "School closure is not a decision I take lightly, but it is currently the best option for all our students and staff as we support those who have lost everything and ensure all buildings are safe for school," CFISD Superintendent Mark Henry said in a statement posted to the district's website. Roughly 17.6 inches of rain fell on Houston on April 18 alone, according to the National Weather Service. The northwest Houston area was hit particularly hard, with water levels in Cypress Creek reaching 127.52 feet, well over banks and significantly above the major flood risk threshold. Cypress Creek continued to rise April 19 as storm water runoff from upstream made its way to Cy-Fair. This has resulted in many Cy-Fair roadways being unsafe for travel for both bus drivers and commuters, Henry said. "Houston TranStar and county officials have shared with me that we are at ground zero of this weather event," Henry said. "I have spoken with Texas Education Agency officials, and they have been very understanding of the magnitude of this disaster. The TEA is working closely with us to determine our options going forward." As water continues to travel downstream, Addicks and Barker reservoirs are being monitored by the Harris County Flood Control District and are expected to crest a record levels. Eldridge Parkway, Barker Cypress Road and Clay Road could all go underwater if Addicks Reservoir floods, officials said. Members of the CFISD community should monitor the district website and social media pages for official updates, Henry said.
