The Living Legacy Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to be the bridge between legal, medical and social services resources to support veterans, senior citizens and individuals with disabilities in Cy-Fair.

“We do not just help our clients reach these resources; we also walk alongside the other nonprofits that are in our area to support their programs and their missions,” Executive Director Elizabeth Hilbun said.

The inspiration

The idea for the center was first sketched out on a cocktail napkin at a Lawyers With Purpose conference in 2014. As a lawyer for 31 years, Hilbun said she would always take a case even when someone could not pay her fees.

Because community members weren't always aware of the resources available to them, Hilbun thought of a charity where she could advocate for community members and connect them with the help they needed.

“[When] I would do a case where somebody couldn't afford the fee, I always noticed that there were other things going on in their world, whether it was domestic violence or it was just different issues that they would run against,” Hilbun said.

How to help

The organization is run entirely by volunteers, so Hilbun said they are always looking for more volunteers. Additionally, people can donate to them through their website.

The nonprofit is entirely funded by the community and does not receive any government funding for its day-to-day operations.

“We want to teach the community how to help their brothers in need and teach them to stand on their own two feet and then be able to help others," Hilbun said. "We think that, yes, the government has its role and has its purpose, but we as a community should support one another and we can.”

Another detail

As part of its Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m.-noon, officials with The Living Legacy Center will honor those who have served in the military, dedicate their military memorial wall and offer light refreshments. The event is open to the public.
