Jersey Village City Council has approved a $4.2 million purchase for six buildings to be the potential future site of city hall as well as the public works, and parks and recreation departments, according to online statements from city officials.

What’s happening

The property was owned by Champion Forest Baptist Church’s Jersey Village campus, and the buildings span 54,000 square feet, according to an Aug. 2 news post on the Jersey Village city website.

The property is located near the intersection of Jersey Village Drive and Rio Grande Street.

“Our plan is to move city hall into one of these buildings,” Mayor Bobby Warren said in an Aug. 2 Facebook post. “While we are still exploring potential uses for the other buildings, I assure you that the community will be deeply involved in the decision-making process. We anticipate a lot of excitement about the opportunities this purchase presents.”

City Council met in closed session Aug. 2 to discuss the 4.2-acre property purchase before taking action, according to Aug. 2 meeting documents.

In case you missed it

Conversations about relocating Jersey Village City Hall have been ongoing for years, Community Impact previously reported. Developers announced plans to build a new city hall on the south side of Hwy. 290 in 2019 as part of the Village Center mixed-use development.

A few months later, City Council reviewed a preliminary design for the new building. However, the project faced various delays since, and some residents have opposed the relocation of city hall.

In 2022, the city announced a new development partner for the town center project and conducted a feasibility study for a baseball stadium as part of the project's future.

City officials will inspect the former Champion Forest Baptist Church property for “structural soundness and general good condition” over the next 60 days, according to the city’s news post.

Warren said he anticipates the sale of the property the new city hall was previously planned for "will be more than sufficient to cover the cost" of the Champion Forest Baptist Church property and its forthcoming renovations.

“The city is excited about the potential these developments bring to the community, and is committed to transparency and engagement with the public as these projects move forward,” the city’s post reads.
