Copeland teacher Aughtney Cox said classes collaborated to build 15 structures out of cans and other packaged food that were all donated to food bank Lovepacs. Her fifth-grade class created a display of the Cy-Fair FCU Stadium.
Her students each contributed to the process in some way, including voting on the structure design, creating the design, calculating the number of cans needed, collecting donations and each writing an informational essay about the project, Cox said.
“Throughout the project, my students have researched and compared can pricing, calculated the amount of cans needed, designed the structure of the project, collaborated as teams to work together and share out reports, and written flyers and letters to inform the community,” she said in an email. “They were even gifted $200 from Cy-Fair FCU towards the collection of their cans. Recently, they have each completed an informational essay about CANstruction in order to share more about the topic with their audiences.”
About 3,000 food items were collected across the campus.
