Deep Cypress Gardens to hold a volunteer meeting March 29

Officials with local nonprofit Deep Cypress Alliance announced plans Feb. 15 for Deep Cypress Gardens, a 7.5-acre project located north of Grant and Louetta roads on Kathy Lane. Early plans include abundant green space, a banquet hall, a restaurant with a patio and a greenhouse.

The concept was introduced by Deep Cypress Conservancy—a new initiative within the DCA dedicated to preserving green space for future generations.

“[Green space] in Cypress is quickly disappearing, and if we don’t do something, it will disappear altogether,” said Teri Quance, president and CEO of Deep Cypress Alliance and a 30-year Cypress resident. “By bonding together, we can withstand fragmented development and save what little green space we have left.”

Additional fundraising events will take place over the course of 2017, including its Dinner in the Field event Oct. 7. A volunteer general meeting will take place March 29 at Rock Creek Community Center, 14223 Winding Springs Drive, Cypress.

A shovel ceremony and a groundbreaking is planned for April 29. The initial goal is to have a grand opening for the public Dec. 31, although some elements, such as the banquet hall, will likely be completed in 2018.

Memorial Hermann to open new Cypress hospital March 31

Hospital officials are putting the finishing touches on the 81-bed Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital, which is on target to open by its March 31 deadline. The hospital is located at 27800 Hwy. 290, Cypress, between Mueschke and Mason roads.

The $168 million project features a 24-hour emergency center, eight operating rooms, a 16-bed intensive care unit, neonatal intensive care unit, labor and delivery center, cardiac catheterization lab and Life Flight helipad. The hospital offers a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and officials also plan to apply to the State of Texas to obtain Level III status for the trauma center.

The new hospital is located on a 32-acre campus where a 45,000-square-foot Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center opened in spring 2016, offering adult and pediatric primary care, an MD Anderson Breast Cancer screening center, sports medicine and rehabilitation services, lab services, outpatient imaging and an emergency center of its own.

Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve to open April 1

The 80-acre Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve will open to the public April 1 with a celebratory event, representing another milestone in the ongoing Cypress Creek Greenway project.

The preserve, located on the east side of Hwy. 249 just south of Chasewood Park Drive, will offer 1.7 miles of paved trail surrounding the 40-acre Marshall Lake. Activities at the grand opening, which runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., include nature presentations, canoeing and pontoon boat rides touring the lake.

The project was developed by Harris County through a partnership with Prestonwood Forest Utility District. Construction began last March, earlier than originally planned thanks to the partnership, county officials said.

“This is the best possible outcome of what can happen when residents, developers, local utility districts and county government work together,” Precinct 4 Commissioner Jack Cagle said. “We can preserve green space and benefit the public. This park is a key piece of the Cypress Creek Greenway that will give residents access to hundreds of acres of land.”
