Montgomery ISD can expect about a 35% enrollment growth over the next decade, according to a Dec. 17 demographics report, but data shows this surge may be more conservative than previously predicted.

Sorting out details

Over the next 10 years, MISD will add almost 3,400 students by 2034, demographics firm Zonda Education predicts in its 2024-25 report. MISD currently has 9,894 students enrolled.

According to Zonda Education’s report, MISD student enrollment:
  • Grew by 1,093 students—representing 12% growth—from 2020 to 2024
  • Will rise by 1,602 students—representing 16% growth—from 2025 to 2029
Meanwhile, last year’s report, created by data consulting firm Population and Survey Analysts, predicted student enrollment would:
  • Total between 14,369 and 18,278 students by 2032, representing a 45% to 85% increase from MISD’s 2024-25 enrollment.
“This [year’s report] really shows very moderate growth from what we've experienced the last three or four years [and] what we were projecting and planning for. ... This is kind of the opposite end of the spectrum,” Board Secretary Eddie Winn said Dec. 17.

What else?

The expected student enrollment growth for MISD is being driven by new housing construction with 16 new single-family subdivisions and four multi-family projects being planned, according to the report.

According to Zonda’s report, within MISD’s boundaries:
  • 34 single-family subdivisions—including Two Step Farm, Pine Lake Cove and Fosters Reserve—are currently adding homes
  • 700 multifamily units are being added from projects such as a 400‐500 unit development, a 30-unit duplex development and Homestead—a 150-unit mobile home neighborhood
