The city of Conroe will collect a 1.13% decrease in sales tax revenue in June compared to June 2019, according to the Texas comptroller of public accounts.

June sales tax revenue data is based on April sales.

Data released by the Texas comptroller of public accounts June 10 reflects the sales tax revenue the cities across Texas will collect as coronavirus-related social distancing guidelines and business restrictions were in effect.

Conroe’s sales tax revenue for June is $3,532,043, while in June 2019 it was $3,572,364, according to the comptroller.

In May, that number was about $4.4 million, while in May 2019 it was $4.6 million.

So far, the city has collected about $24.57 million in sales tax revenue this year, while last year at this time, it had collected $23.89 million, which represents a 2.79% increase.

City officials have said better-than-expected sales tax revenue for the first half of fiscal year 2019-20 has cushioned most of the blow the coronavirus could have on year-end numbers.

“Where it’s really going to hurt us is [when] we start talking about next year’s budget, ... looking at next year’s sales tax number,” Conroe Assistant Director of Finance Collin Boothe said.

For FY 2020-21, the city could see a loss of $1.5 million, he said at an April 23 City Council meeting.
