City of Katy officials announced Wednesday additional athletes who will compete in the Celebrity Flag Football Challenge.

The game will feature a rematch of Flutie versus Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, according to the city. Additionally, former Katy High School quarterback and current Cincinnati Bengal Andy Dalton will serve as a team captain across from Hall of Fame former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Irvin.

The full roster is still being filled, city officials said. More NFL players, celebrities, musicians and actors are expected to play in the game.

The National Football League will make a stop in downtown Katy en route to Super Bowl LI at NRG Stadium.

The city of Katy will host the 16th annual Celebrity Flag Football Challenge in conjunction with Celebrity Sweat and Katy ISD at Rhodes Stadium on Feb. 4 prior to the big game, which takes place Feb. 5.

According to Kayce Reina, the city’s director of tourism, marketing and public relations, the flag football game will be part of a lineup of events, which includes a tailgate party and chili cook off, a brewery mixer and a Super Bowl viewing party.

“Katy ISD is looking forward to this event,” said Ben Rolens, general manager of special events, reservations and marketing for KISD. “It will provide a unique experience for Katy and the surrounding community to experience a part of the Super Bowl festivities right here in Katy.”

Reina said Celebrity Sweat, an NFL affiliate who puts on the flag football challenge in the Super Bowl’s host city each year, approached her in November after identifying Katy as the choice location for its 2017 event. Katy’s rich football history—Katy High School was named 2015-16 MaxPreps national champion and is an eight-time state champion—made the city a desirable option for the organization, she said.

According to Reina, the Taste of Katy Chili Bowl will begin at 9 a.m. on the south side of the visitor’s parking lot on the east side of the stadium off Katy Fort Bend Road. The tailgate and chili cook off portion of the event will last until noon and will incorporate a variety of other activities, including live entertainment, vendors, autograph sessions, celebrity chefs and a kids zone. While there will be an entry fee to compete in the cook off, there will not be a fee to attend the tailgate, she said. Proceeds from the cook off will go to the Katy Rotary Club and will be used to fund scholarships.

Rhodes Stadium will open at noon, and the flag football game will take place from 1-3 p.m. Reina said former NFL quarterback Doug Flutie has already committed to be the signal caller of one of the teams. The partnering organizations are still in the process of determining other celebrities who will compete, she said. Reina said she expects celebrities to come from several disciplines, and team captains are expected to be determined by Dec. 18. NFL players will wait to commit to the event based how their respective teams finish the season and playoffs, she said.

According to Reina, there will be a $20 admission fee involved with attending the flag football game, but she said Celebrity Sweat intends to give away a number of free tickets to KISD students. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. ESPN will livestream the game online and later broadcast it on TV, she said.

“They know that we’re a very football-centric community; we live and breathe football around here,” Reina said. “The city of Katy’s going to be marketed both on a national level as well as a local level.”

Reina said an afterparty will take place from 4-8 p.m. Feb. 4 at No Label Brewery. In addition, she is still in the process of coordinating a Super Bowl watch party at Typhoon Texas on Feb. 5. Tickets to the afterparty will cost $15, she said.

Katy City Council approved a $61,415 grant from the city’s Convention and Tourism Bureau to help fund the Taste of Katy Chili Bowl at its Dec. 12 meeting.

“We are excited that this is an event which will gather and unite the Katy ISD community,” KISD’s Executive Director of Athletics Debbie Decker said. “We truly appreciate the Super Bowl reaching out to the surrounding cities.”
