Officials with the city of Katy Parks and Recreation Department cancelled a volunteer planting day scheduled for Saturday at the new arboretum in Katy City Park.
Amy Reed, Katy community relations and volunteer coordinator, said the planting of 150 trees and shrubs has been rescheduled for April 1 and 2.
“We didn’t have enough volunteers,” Reed said. “There were [also] some other obstacles.”
The arboretum will be planted within the 3-acre Katy City Park, located at 5720 Franz Road, and include a variety of native trees and shrubs. The center will also feature a walking path with educational plaques describing the habitat as well.
An estimated $70,000 in funding for the arboretum has been provided equally by the city of Katy and CenterPoint Energy. However, Reed said the city is in dire need of volunteers for the April 2 planting date and also monetary support.
“We are also in need of donations of supplies or funds to purchase supplies,” she said.
Among the items needed are work gloves, shovels, wheelbarrows and hand trucks. The city is also accepting monetary donations for needed supplies.
Reed said the April 1 planting day will be manned by volunteers from CenterPoint Energy.
On April 2, volunteers will participate in a city-organized “Community Friends” day of planting from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided to all volunteers.
“We are in great need of volunteers for [April 2],” Reed said.
