Pearland City Council unanimously approved the annexation of 484 acres of land along Bailey Road on Nov. 23. Residents within the newly annexed boundaries will begin paying taxes in October, according to city officials. Some affected residents opposed the annexation, which is made up of two 242-acre tracts on the north and south sides of Bailey Road. The area north of the thoroughfare stretches between Kennedy Drive and FM 1128, and the second segment on the south side of the road is located from FM 1128 to Veterans Drive, officials said. The annexation will help the city manage growth in the corridor, which is undergoing a widening project to expand Bailey Road from FM 1128 to Veterans Drive, officials said. The city of Pearland will begin providing new or enhanced services in the area as part of the annexation, officials said. City services include street maintenance, solid waste collection and enhanced police and emergency response. The new land within the city limits will undergo a zoning process to determine the best use of land, Pearland Director of Community Development Lata Krishnarao said. “We’ll get residents involved [in the zoning process],” she said. “We’ll do a detailed land-use analysis to see what [zone] makes [the] most sense.”
