Shelter moves forwardMontgomery County Montgomery County is temporarily managing the Montgomery County Animal Shelter while interviews are conducted to replace its previous operator, Care Corporation.

The decision was finalized Nov. 2 after Commissioners Court heard a number of concerns about the management of the shelter and condition of the animals from volunteers and other stakeholders. The court voted during an Aug. 11 meeting to rescind its contract with Care Corporation, which had operated the animal shelter since January.

Members of Montgomery County Commissioners Court are conducting a nationwide search for a new shelter director, Precinct 4 Commissioner Jim Clark said. Interim staff are being hired on a contract basis to run the shelter until a new director is hired.

“We are down in the trenches trying to make sure that everything is getting done and we care for the animals,” Clark said. “That is the major concern right now. There is no road map for this process so we have to address things as it comes.”

To reduce overcrowding in the facility, the animal shelter is holding a $25 pet adoption special through the end of November. As part of the special, adopted pets are spayed or neutered, and vaccinated.
