The Klein ISD board of trustees has approved about 106 additional personnel for the 2015-16 school year, which could cost the district $5.5 million in the 2015-16 budget.

Of the 106 positions, about 96 will work directly with students at the campus level, said Curt Drouillard, associate superintendent of human resource services for KISD. About 22 new nonteaching positions will be added at French Elementary School.

The KISD board approved the staffing plan at the April 13 board meeting. The staffing changes will be included in the 2015-16 budget when the board approves it later this summer.

The 106 new positions is a decrease from the 170-plus positions added in 2014-15, Drouillard said.

“In 2014-15, the district added a number of positions due to our ‘Good to Great’ program that serves our Klein Forest [High School] feeder pattern schools,” he said. “Also, we added a number of positions due to growth across our school district in 2014-15, and for the initial staff of French Elementary that will open this August.”

A new elementary school is expected to open in the 2016-17 school year in the Willow Lakes Village subdivision. Although the staffing plan does not include personnel for the school, Drouillard said the district will amend the budget in the spring of 2016 to accommodate new positions for the school.

The district’s $498 million bond election May 9 could affect the number of additional personnel because of initial planning for High School No. 5, set to open in 2017, district officials said.
