The city of Oak Ridge North held a special-called city council meeting Thursday evening to take action on several agenda items, including the swearing in of new council member Dawn Candy and new deputy court clerk, Emily Wright, as well as the presentation of a new police motorcycle and the operation of robot brothels within city limits.
Dawn Candy was unanimously appointed by the Oak Ridge North City Council last month to fill the vacated seat of Michelle Cassio, following her resignation. On Thursday evening, Candy was officially sworn in as council member for Place 4. Candy is a local business owner and a mother of three and grandmother of seven. She and her husband, Randy Lovelace, bought a home in Oak Ridge North in 2016. Candy will serve the remaining months of Cassio’s term until May 2019 and has stated she plans to seek re-election.
The council also celebrated the unveiling of a brand-new 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle for the Oak Ridge North Police Department. The total cost of the bike, with upgrades, is $24,630. The bike is outfitted with microphones, wireless transmitters and a laptop in the carrier. The rider’s helmet is equipped with a camera and portable radio.
The council also voted unanimously to revise the city's current sexually-oriented business ordinance to prohibit the operation of a robot brothel in the city.
“I cannot believe in this world today we are actually going to talk about sex robots,” Mayor Jim Kuykendall said.
The action comes just weeks after
Harris County moved to prohibit businesses that allow customers to interact with “sex robots.” Similar revisions were made to Oak Ridge North’s Code of Ordinances and the definitions of “adult arcade,” “adult device” and “entertainment.”
