Based in San Antonio, Over The Top Cake Supplies stores offer one-stop shopping for baking needs as well as learning opportunities for children and adults.
Local resident and baker Jennifer Boudreaux opened an Over The Top Cake Supplies franchise location March 29 at 453 Sawdust Road, The Woodlands.
“I’m a cake decorator in the area, and the closest supply store that specializes in cake stuff is in Bellaire,” Boudreaux said. “It was a crazy drive for anything, so I felt like it was a good idea [to open a store like this in The Woodlands].”
Boudreaux is originally from Wisconsin and moved to Texas in 2012. She is a self-taught baker and cake decorator, and has been creating sweets from her home for the last four years, she said.
“It was kind of a fluke,” Boudreaux said. “I just kind of started [decorating cakes].”
At Over The Top Cake Supplies, the shelves are stocked with durable pans, baking sheets and utensils, Boudreaux said. The staff is available to help customers choose the best tools for a baking project.
“We try to stock professional-level supplies because most home bakers also want that,” she said. “They don’t want the lower level, cheaper stuff.”
In addition to basic supplies, the store also carries designer stencils, cake toppers, airbrush cake colors and a topping wall featuring assorted colors and sizes.
“[We have] just about anything you can think of,” Boudreaux said. “From the cookie cutters to chocolate molds to fillings and cake mixes and fondant supplies—it’s just about everything you’d need to make any cake.”
Although Over The Top Cake Supplies mainly provides items for small-scale and home bakers, sometimes the store provides necessities for local grocery stores and bakeries, Boudreaux said.
Classes offered at the store include regular Wednesday night meetings with various themes and lessons incorporated, Boudreaux said. Over The Top Cake Supplies also offers camps and birthday parties for children, during which they learn to decorate cupcakes and cookies, Boudreaux said.
“What sets us apart is the classes and the birthday parties,” she said. “Here, it’s two hours where they’re a bit more directed but they’re still having fun, and it’s something they don’t get to do very often.”
The regular classes at Over The Top Cake Supplies welcome beginner and intermediate cake decorators as well as bakers with a lot of experience, Boudreaux said. Participants can create specialty items, such as unicorn cupcakes and holiday-themed cupcakes or cookies, she said.
“People have been waiting for something like us to open on this side of Houston,” Boudreaux said.
