LaTanya Love has stepped into the role of interim president at UTHealth Houston and is set to begin her new role March 1.

The overview

Love currently serves as the university’s executive vice president of student and university affairs, and dean of education at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston located at the Texas Medical Center. She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics in UTHealth Houston in 2004, joined the faculty after 2005, and previously served as the medical director of student health services.

Love said in a Feb. 14 news release that she is honored to serve in the temporary role.

“I love this university and am honored to serve our students, trainees, faculty and staff in this interim role as we advance the mission of UTHealth Houston,” she said.

The outlook

As interim president, Love will expand the scope of her work to further the university’s strategic plan set forth by former president Giuseppe Colasurdo. UTHealth Houston’s 2015-25 strategic plan includes priorities such as:

  • Building stronger, more integrated affiliations with academic and clinical partners
  • Developing new delivery models focused on improving health care quality
  • Improving standards of care
  • Advancing expertise in biomedical informatics through collaborative projects and programs within their seven schools
Officials at the medical school announced they are still conducting their national search for a replacement for Colasurdo who served more than 12 years in the role, the longest tenure of any UTHealth Houston president.
