Construction began June 27 on a new $299 million school of public health for UTHealth Houston in the Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park.
The building, part of UTHealth Houston School of Public Health system, will be a 10-story, 350,000-square-foot school to conduct more translational research and student education, which will help improve responses to future public health issues, according to a June 26 news release. It will also house research laboratories, a teaching kitchen for dietetic interns and collaborative spaces.
“The new building reflects our bold thinking as we pioneer radical solutions for imminent and future public health challenges while giving our students the tools and resources to improve the health of Texas,” said Eric Boerwinkle, dean of UTHealth School of Public Health, in a statement.
With an eye on sustainability, features for the new building include rainwater harvesting for irrigation, abundant natural light, access to green space and a holistic teaching garden.
This three-year project is expected to open in time for the 2026 fall semester.
