West University Place residents will be able to vote for all four council member positions and the mayor this May.

What you need to know

West University holds their general elections on the first Saturday in May of odd-numbered years. The next general election will be held May 3. The filing period for candidates wishing to run for these positions opened Jan. 15 and will remain open until Feb. 14.

As of Jan. 22, no candidates have filed for the open positions in West University. Current members who hold these positions include:
  • Mayor: Susan Sample
  • Mayor Pro Tem: John Montgomery
  • Position 2: Clay Brett
  • Position 3: Matt Hart
  • Position 4: Shannon Carroll
Sample was elected in 2021 and is currently serving her fourth overall term as mayor and second consecutive term after defeating opponent John Barnes for re-election in the 2023 race. Montgomery and Carroll are serving their second terms on City Council, while Brett and Hart will complete their first term at the dais this year.

According to the city's website, members can't serve more than three consecutive terms in office.

Early voting for the May election is April 22-29 with Election Day held May 3. The deadline to apply for a mail ballot is April 22 and the last day to register to vote is April 3.

Something to note

Bellaire will hold its general election in November and will have four positions open, including the mayor, council member positions one, three and five. According to the city's website, the notice of deadline to file applications for a place on the November ballot will be posted in June with July filing dates and times.
