With all voting centers reporting in Harris County, Susan Sample has won her re-election bid for mayor in the city of West University Place, according to unofficial results.

Sample earned 67.8% of the votes against her opponent John Barnes, or 1,594 votes to Barnes' 756.

In the race for West University Place City Council, John Montgomery, Shannon Carroll, Clay Brett and Matt Hart finished as the top four vote-getters and will take the four seats on the council. The four candidates each finished with 24.4%, 21.6%, 21.2% and 19.1% of the votes, respectively.

All votes are unofficial until canvassed.

With 100 of 126 voting centers reporting results in Harris County, unofficial results show Susan Sample on track to win the race for mayor in the city of West University Place.

Unofficial results also show John Montgomery, Shannon Carroll, Clay Brett and Matt Hart taking the four seats up for election on the West University Place City Council.

Sample leads her opponent John Barnes with 67.1% of the votes, or 1,078 votes to Barnes' 528.


The vote totals for the West University Place City Council were as follows:
  • Montgomery has 24.2% of the votes, or 1,227 votes.
  • Carroll has 21.8% of the votes, or 1,108 votes.
  • Brett has 21% of the votes, or 1,067 votes.
  • Hart has 19.7% of the votes, or 1,000 votes.
  • Buckley Morlot has 13.3% of the votes, or 674 votes.

    With early voting results tallied, Susan Sample is leading John Barnes in the race for mayor in the city of West University Place with 67.2% of the votes.

    Sample has 1,032 early votes, compared to 503 votes for Barnes.

    In a Q&A with Community Impact, Sample, an attorney and the incumbent in the race, said her top priorities include public safety, making drainage improvements, and improving quality of life for residents via initiatives such as parks, safe streets and water quality.


    "Our 2022 Citizen Survey shows 90% of residents find us moving in the right direction," Sample said. "I am running to ensure we move forward on other milestone projects while maintaining the qualities that make West U home."

    Barnes, an attorney who has served as a council member on the West University Place City Council since 2019, said he was running to be a voice for residents with a focus on flood control.

    "Every two years, residents make a choice to entrust candidates with their tax dollars, their quality of life, and their safety and security," Barnes said. "I am running to give them that choice."

    Meanwhile, John Montgomery, Shannon Carroll, Clay Brett and Matt Hart are leading the open race for four seats on the West University Place City Council. Five candidates sought a seat on the council in the 2023 election. Voters are allowed to cast ballots for four candidates, and the top four vote-getters at the end of the night will earn those seats.


    Buckley Morlot is trailing the crowd with 13.1% of the votes, or 635 votes. The other candidates have earned the following vote totals with early voting results in:
    • Montgomery has 24.3% of the votes, or 1,176 votes.
    • Carroll has 21.9% of the votes, or 1,061 votes.
    • Brett has 21.1% of the votes, or 1,023 votes.
    • Hart has 19.7% of the votes, or 955 votes.
    Of the four seats on the Council, two are held by Montgomery and Carroll, one is being vacated by Barnes, who is running for mayor, and one is held by Melanie Bell, who is not running for re-election.     All council members and the mayor serve two-year terms without compensation. In 2021, Sample won her race against Kevin Trautner with 51.7% of the votes, a margin of 124 votes.

    Both the mayor and members of the Council cannot serve more than three consecutive terms.
