The Hermann Park Conservancy will celebrate the 178th birthday of George Hermann, the man who gifted the parkland to the city of Houston. Learn about the Japanese star festival Aug. 7

Children’s Museum Houston invites the public to make a wish at the Tanabata Japanese Star Festival, which celebrates the Japanese legend of two star-crossed lovers separated by the Milky Way. The children’s event, hosted in partnership with the Consulate General of Japan in Houston, will include an interactive storytelling experience, origami class, and a chance to make a wish and hang it on a bonobo tree. 10 a.m.-3 p.m. $12 (includes admission to museum). Hear from photographer Vik Muniz Aug. 12

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston will host a virtual conversation between Vik Muniz, a Brazilian photographer and mixed-media artist, and photography curator Malcolm Daniel. Get gardening tips from an expert Aug. 25

Jean Fefer, Harris County master gardener and former 16-year chemistry teacher with the University of Houston, will teach a gardening class on propagation techniques and barriers to germination.
