After nearly two years since Harris County commissioners approved funding for the Bayland Park’s master plan, improved facilities, programming, transportation connectivity and enhanced green space are just a few new upgrades coming to the Harris County Precinct 4 park.
Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones invited the local community out May 3 for a family-centered event where she explained new initiatives taking place that came after engaging with local community members and stakeholders.
“Bayland has a special place in our hearts," Briones said. "We have been wanting upgrades, renovations and improvements, whether it’s with regard to drainage, connectivity or transit. These are your ideas on how to improve.”
Harris County commissioners first approved the approximately $465,000 project contract to work with engineering firm Ardurra Group Inc. in July 2023. Archie Thompson, one of the project managers with the county, said construction on the park could possibly start in 2026 and wrap up in 2027 if the project design is completed in 2025. If design isn't completed this year, Thompson said construction would start the following year and push the project back to 2028.

Miguel Rodriguez, the little league baseball coach for Bayland Park, said county staff explained to him how the two phases of construction will be considerate of not impacting the different sports seasons that take place in the park.
“They’re going to redo the community center," Rodriguez said. "They’re going to do it in two phases. They’re going to work the baseball fields first because they don’t want us to lose a season and if they do, they’ll get us to play somewhere else.”
Other active areas being incorporated into the park, according to the master plan and county staff, include a:
- Dog park
- Event lawn
- Football stadium
- Basketball court
- Picnic area
- Event space
- Community garden
- Stormwater detention
- Enhanced greenery to line the boundaries instead of fences along Bissonnet Street where food trucks can be stationed
- Connectivity with METRO transportation
