Sugar Land seeking resident feedback for Burney Road safety improvements

The city of Sugar Land is seeking resident feedback on how to make Burney Road safer. 

The details

City staff presented four options for improving Burney Road at the intersections of Stadium Drive and Jess Pirtle Boulevard at a Sept. 23 public meeting. The presentation comes as officials are conducting an engineering study looking at traffic flow, safety, design options and neighborhood impacts.

Options include:

• Adding roundabouts to both Stadium Drive and Jess Pirtle Boulevard intersections

• Adding traffic signals to both Stadium Drive and Jess Pirtle Boulevard intersections

• Adding a traffic signal to Stadium Drive and a roundabout to Jess Pirtle Boulevard

• Adding a roundabout to Stadium Drive and a traffic signal to Jess Pirtle Boulevard

City officials are seeking input from residents via an online form through Oct. 9, City Engineer Carla Barrios said.

Zooming out 

The study comes after residents raised concerns about the Stadium Drive and Burney Road intersection causing delays, backups and safety issues, according to the city’s website. 

The study, which started in January, is part of a nearly $2.18 million project to improve the area, which also looks at sidewalk reconstruction along Burney Road from Stadium Drive to Seventh Street. 

Looking forward  

The traffic study is expected to be completed in November, Barrios said. City staff will then review the study and determine potential design, construction and funding needs, but a specific timeline has not been established.
