Library-goers have been waiting for the opening of their new Westbury neighborhood library named after local NASA astronaut Shannon Walker since last fall. While an official opening date hasn't been set, Houston Public Library officials told Community Impact the city of Houston has until March 31 to reach substantial completion in the construction stage.

Next steps

Library spokesperson LaDonna Weems said the city is still working on construction before they can have access to the building. Once they have access and construction is complete, then library officials will be able to furnish the inside, she said.

According to an update from District K Houston City Council member Martha Castex-Tatum’s office, the 23,260-square-foot space space will be a community hub with a variety of media spaces, private study nooks and a space-themed teen room.

The details

The Dr. Shannon Walker Library will serve the Westbury, Meyerland, Brays Oaks and Hiram Clarke communities. The long-awaited library is meant to serve as a replacement for the Meyer Library, which flooded during Hurricane Harvey.


The library will feature areas for children, teens and adults as well as a meeting room; a conference room; computers; and a TechLink area equipped with video, music and multimedia technology.
