Pool season is officially here and while the Houston Parks and Recreation Department opened more than 20 aquatic centers across the city over Memorial Day Weekend, the Westbury Park pool could remain closed until the 2024 pool season due to new filters being ordered and installed.

The bottom line: In an update sent out in an email newsletter, District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum said the Westbury pool was slated to re-open in time for the 2024 season, although officials with the city’s Park and Recreation Deptartment said in an email that there’s a chance they could reopen in Mid-August, giving residents a few weeks of use before the 2023 pool season ends on Sept. 3.

What they’re saying: “We are doing everything in our power to fast-track production and installation [of new pool filters]. The earliest possible opening date will be late July to mid-August, providing there are no hiccups,” Houston Park officials said.

Why? The community pool, located at 10605 Mullins Drive, Houston, is listed as out-of-service on the Houston Parks and Recreation Department website. Officials with the Parks Deptartment said that the Westbury pool has been closed since 2022. Other updates park officials mentioned included:

  • They ordered the filters and expect a 6-8 week delivery date, plus a three-week installation
  • Park officials received drawings from the pool engineer to price the installation
  • Once the filters are installed, park officials will schedule a health inspection
  • The two Neptune-Benson single sand filters are expected to arrive July 10-July 24
  • The installation is expected to be completed between July 28-Aug. 11

Current situation: Castex-Tatum also mentioned that she inquired with the city about the cost of a new Westbury pool, but said that it would cost approximately $9 million dollars. Currently, she said the estimated costs to replace the entire mechanical and piping for the Westbury pool ranges from $700,000-$900,000 dollars.

The outlook: The closest pool open in District K is roughly 7 miles away at the Townwood Park pool located at 3402 Simsbrook Drive.
