The iconic battleship that served in World War I and World War II arrived at the Gulf Copper & Manufacturing Corp. shipyard in Galveston for repairs Aug. 31. The project is organized by the Battleship Texas Foundation, the ship’s operator Valkor Energy Services and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

Battleship Texas moved from the San Jacinto Battleground site for the $35 million repairs on the ship’s hull due to leaks. The Gulf Copper shipyard was selected for the repairs since it has a floating drydock capable of lifting the battleship out of the water, according to a press release.

The ship was closed to the public in 2019, and the BTF, Valkor and Resolve Marine Group worked to reduce the volume of leaking water into the ship. The team managed to reduce the leak from 2,000 gallons per minute to 20 gallons per minute with expanded foam, allowing the ship to be transported safely, according to the press release.
