What they’re saying
League City resident BJ Buchanan, who lives adjacent to the marina, said he observed suspicious activity and unlicensed boats docking in the marina.
“We would see boats coming in at night, at two in the morning, docking on boats ... and cars coming into the parking lot at all hours of the night,” he said.
League City resident Roger Spathias, who lives near Marina del Sol, said he has observed “weird” activity on a regular basis through his house cameras.
“It's just ongoing, day in and day out,” Spathias said.
The backstory
In 2023, League City designated the area as a planned unit development, adding additional parking while leaving the marina unchanged as roughly 45 people lived on boats there at the time, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.
In an interview published by the city in November, League City Mayor Long said abandoned boats, which oftentimes sink, had become increasingly hazardous for other boats and the general bay area.
At an Oct. 28 City Council workshop, the League City Police Department discussed policies for abandoned boats and maintaining marina safety.
Under the proposed ordinance, only usable, uncompromised boats would be allowed to dock in marinas, such as boats without holes in them.
The ordinance would also require “liveaboards,” or residents who live permanently in the boats, to secure a permit with the city.
Looking ahead
Long said the residents' concerns would be addressed at the Dec. 16 City Council meeting.
