League City City Council will hold a public hearing and take a vote on a new battery energy storage facility, or BESS, at its Sept. 24 meeting.

What you need to know

The BESS, owned and operated by Peregrine Energy, will be placed between Hwy. 3 and Dickinson Avenue, south of Washington Avenue, according to city documents. The proposed project is 150 megawatts.

A BESS is a facility of batteries that stores energy and sells it back to the grid when more power is needed to meet demand, Community Impact previously reported.

The vote comes several months after the city approved in July an ordinance laying out requirements for such projects to come into the city.

If approved, it will be the first of two approvals needed before the ordinance can go into effect. All ordinances approved by the city require two votes, according to city documents.

What else?

City Council will also consider an ordinance that, if approved, would prohibit food trucks from operating at existing commercial businesses, according to city documents. It would need two approvals to go into effect.
