Houston Mayor John Whitmire appointed two new members to the Houston Spaceport Development Corporation during a Sept. 18 City Council meeting, including the corporation's new president, Jim Szczesniak.

Two-minute impact

Szczesniak was named the new director of aviation in February for the Houston Airport System.

According to the HAS website, Szczesniak had more than two decades of management experience before his appointment. As director of aviation, he is responsible for the overall management of Houston's three facilities, including George Bush IAH, Hobby and Ellington Airport, where the Houston Spaceport is located.

The Houston Spaceport is the nation's 10th commercial spaceport and functions as a launch and landing site for suborbital, reusable launch vehicles. It also offers laboratory office space with large-scale hardware production facilities for research purposes.

Houston's Spaceport Development Corporation's board of directors are in charge of helping to obtain funding for the spaceport and providing advice to city officials concerning potential future development of the spaceport.
