Property owners are responsible for maintaining branches from trees on their property, and League City officials encouraged residents to trim them to improve safety and emergency response times.

What you need to know

According to a League City news release, untrimmed branches cost time for and damage the vehicles of emergency response teams in addition to blocking passage for buses, garbage trucks and other large vehicles.

According to the city’s tree maintenance standards, property owners with property on public roads are responsible for maintaining the trees on that property. Even when trees are in the city’s right of way, property owners are still responsible for maintaining them.

The maintenance requirements are:
  • Trees must not obstruct light from streetlights.
  • There must be a clear space 15 feet above the surface of the sidewalk to a tree’s branches.
  • Trees must not obstruct the view of any street sign or intersection.
