The second annual Bike the Gulf Biketober Challenge has begun and will run until Oct. 31 across Houston-area counties.

What to know

The event is hosted by the Houston-Galveston Area Council and its Commute Solutions program for bike riders across Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller counties in partnership with the initiative Love to Ride.

The initiative invites individuals, families and workplaces to ride their bikes as much as possible throughout October, according to an H-GAC news release.

Each ride logged on the Love to Ride Bike the Gulf website gives riders a chance to win prizes such as $2,500 cash. Workplaces will compete against others of similar size to promote team bonding and healthier lifestyles across the region, according to the news release.

Quote of note

"October is the perfect time to jump on your bike and rediscover the joy of cycling,” said Robyn Egbert, senior program coordinator for the H-GAC Transportation Department. “Biking isn’t just about fitness—it’s a fun and easy way to reduce stress, improve your mood, and contribute to cleaner air for everyone.”
