The new specializations are slated to roll out through the 2026-27 school year, officials said at CCISD’s board of trustees’ Dec. 8 workshop.
What you need to know
The idea to re-envision the science magnet program at Seabrook and Brookside Intermediate schools stems from an effort to expand opportunities for students, officials said.
For example, there is only one way to showcase student learning in science, which is the science and engineering fair, said Franklin Moses, CCISD’s assistant superintendent of secondary education.
“It forces every student to go through the same process, and the same type of project,” Moses said at the workshop. “That lends to student fatigue, lack of engagement and some missed opportunities into possible deeper authentic scientific discovery.”
Changes in the science magnet program will include:
- An option to take up to nine science magnet electives quarterly Quest Courses before leaving intermediate schools; students are currently able to take up to three electives.
- More student-driven choice and personalized science pathways
- Expanded science showcases pathways in the scientific research course, including through the science and engineering fair, as well as the Games in Space Challenge, Region IV STEM Design Challenge, Houston Rodeo Agricultural Science Fair and Space Center Houston EcoChallenge
The new bell schedule will go into effect in fall 2026, and the quarterly Quest Courses, as well as the new competitive pathways, will take effect in spring 2027, officials said.
What else?
CCISD is also expanding its space, technology, robotics, engineering, arts and medicine, or STREAM, initiative to Clear Creek, Victory Lakes and Clear Lake Intermediate schools.
The expansion stems from the success of the STREAM launch in February at Space Center Intermediate, which integrates robotics and coding into the core day, officials said.
The three intermediate schools will have the following specialized themes with partners in the 2026-27 school year:
- Clear Creek Intermediate: visual and performing arts, partnering with The Museum of Fine Arts
- Victory Lakes Intermediate: medical science, partnering with local hospitals
- Clear Lake Intermediate: aviation and museum studies, partnering with The Lone Star Flight Museum
