Students within San Jacinto College’s criminal justice department may get a chance to test out using drones as part of their studies.

Long story short

John White, a San Jacinto College criminal justice professor, completed drone certification training at the College’s EDGE Center to share his expertise with his students, according to an August news release.

White said drones will assist the criminal justice program by helping students master skills in public safety situations, such as searching for escaped inmates, car accident scenes or gathering evidence. Officials said drones are a "practical skill" that can add value to a variety of areas.

It will also help students become familiar with the legal requirements of drones, which require, among other things, a license, according to the news release. Other concerns, such as privacy and the consequences of operating such devices, will be taught as well.

Quote of note

“Now it’s not just something I’ve heard of but something I’ve accomplished, and it gives me a new thing to teach the students that is relevant to their other coursework,” White said.
