Harris County officials on Feb. 11 broke ground on a new $5 million project at Challenger 7 Memorial Park in League City.

The project, which is being paid for in part by Harris County and a grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, will include upgrades in several areas of the park.

The full story

The project will take place in three different areas of the park, according to county documents. Those areas include:
  • Boardwalk area, which will include replacing the current boardwalk with a new, improved one
  • Trailhead and boat ramp area, which will include installing a new trailhead and repurposing the existing boat ramp to include more walking trails
  • Playground, which will include renovating the current playground with new equipment and benches
Beyond these specific upgrades, areas like the boardwalk will also have new learning components installed such as new classrooms, Alonzo Guadarrama, special projects specialist for Harris County Precinct 2, said in a Feb. 11 email.

The boat ramp will also have a seating area, a floating kayak launch and new plantings, Guadarrama said.

The cost for the project totals $5.3 million—including $4.3 million in construction costs—paid for by the county with the help of a $1.5 million grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Guadarrama said. The rest, $3.8 million, comes from the county.

Officials expect construction to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and take about a year to complete, county documents show.

The project is part of Harris County Precinct 2’s Revive2Thrive initiative, which aims to revitalize areas throughout Precinct 2 with new projects and investments, Guadarrama said.
