On Nov. 13, The Astrodome Conservancy revealed plans for a $1 billion redevelopment concept—Vision: Astrodome—that would feature four buildings inside the arena with new arena space for events and entertainment.

The gist

The redeveloped dome would be surrounded by restaurants, retail and office spaces, and commercial-use spaces, according to a Nov. 13 news release from Astrodome Conservancy.

Houston-based architect Gensler began designing the new vision for the Astrodome in 2023, which proposed 450,000 square feet of revenue-generating space, according to the release.

The new plans propose additional parking, storage and animal holding facilities underneath a new ground floor, the release states.

“It creates a really, really unique environment. You have buildings within a building. It gives you ... something you've never seen before ... outdoor spaces that are indoors,” Gensler co-managing director Jerry Alexander said at a Nov. 13 press conference.

What else?

The Astrodome has been dormant for fifteen years, according to the release. A 2020 survey done by the Astrodome Conservancy showed 86% of respondents believed the Astrodome can and should reuse the world’s first domed stadium.

The Astrodome Conservancy announced at the Nov. 13 press conference it will propose Vision: Astrodome as a component of the NRG Master Plan, and it will conduct a feasibility study to determine the economic viability of the concept.

NRG Park, which is owned by Harris County, is home to the Houston Livestock Show, the Houston Texans and the Astrodome, and is managed by the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation.

Also of note

Astrodome Conservancy Chairman Phoebe Tudor said in the release that the dome’s status as a Texas historical landmark could leverage private investment funding, minimizing public investment.

“We can create a successful public-private partnership to ensure this Houston treasure will have a bright future,” Tudor said in the release.
