In early July, League City officials unveiled a new mural that had been painted along the back of new concrete bleachers that have been added to the pavilion at Lynn Gripon Park, 100 Alderwood St., League City.

Local artist Elizabeth Umanzor painted the mural, which features plants, birds, butterflies, a possum, a turtle, an armadillo and an alligator. Each of the things Umanzor painted are native to the park.

In a video about the mural, Umanzor said she’s painted the mural as part of League City’s art initiative.

“I grew up pretty close to League City, so I just feel like the lack of art around this side of town is very evident compared to Houston, downtown, so I think it’s awesome that they’re bringing more art, more murals so the people here can have access to public art,” she said.

Umanzor said she’s painted several murals but that the one for Lynn Gripon Park is her favorite. She loves painting nature and wildlife, which made painting this mural fun, she said.

This summer, Umanzor will paint a mini mural on a traffic utility box in the city. Artists will paint another five at various intersections, including along Butler Road, Bay Area Boulevard, Landing Boulevard, I-45 and the entrance to Kroger at Market 96.

After the six murals are painted this summer, the total number of mini murals in the city will be 26.

League City local Adam Socie earlier in the summer completed painting a mini mural at League City Parkway and Magnolia Meadows Lane. It features bluebonnet flowers.

This fall, League City will host a mural contest to allow amateur and professional artists to submit mural designs. Up to 10 winning designs will be selected and be digitally printed and wrapped on traffic signal boxes.
