As the sun arced over the courses at the Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine on June 12, Grapevine Police Chief Mike Hamlin finished welcoming guests to the ceremony to remember fallen Grapevine police officer Darren Medlin.
In the remembrance ceremony, about 200 people gathered to honor the memory of Medlin at the conclusion of the 11th annual Darren Medlin Memorial Golf Tournament.
"I am really, truly blessed to have this [ceremony] every year," said, Gina Medlin, Darren Medlin's wife.
The ceremony marked 15 years since Darren Medlin was killed in the line of duty. To commemorate the occasion, Saving A Hero's Place Inc. presented a memorial chair in honor of Darren Medlin to the police department.
In April, Grapevine police updated its police badges and badge numbers, with the numbers reflecting when an officer joined the police force. The police department had calculated Darren Medlin's badge number would have been 217. At the ceremony, the police department gifted Darren Medlin's family with the new police badge made with Darren Medlin's new badge number.
"That number will never be anybody else's. It is only Darren's," Hamlin said. "That is the way that in the law enforcement, we remember. Every law enforcement officer, they remember that badge number."
Along with the badge, Darren Medlin's family was presented with a memorial challenge coin bearing Darren Medlin's portrait and emblems to demonstrate his history of service.
"We're sharing this history of Darren with those who didn't know him," Hamlin said.
